  .........some hot news of current month ..The highlights of the Railway budget 2008-09 are as follows: 1. 50 Railway stations, including CST Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Howrah, Sealdah, Varanasi, New Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Kanpur, Chennai Central, Thiruvananthapuram Central, Secunderabad, Bangalore, Byappanahalli, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Habibganj, Agra Central, Chandigarh, Kolkata, New Jalpaiguri, Puri and Kochi, will be developed to have world-class facilities. 2. Railways to develop multi-functional complexes with shopping malls, food stalls, medicines and variety stores in different parts of the country. 3. Railways to introduce 67 new trains across the nation. 4. Infotainment services to be provided in major long-distance trains. 5. One doctor to be posted on long distance trains. 6. 309 stations out of 375 across the nation have been identified for development and special facilities will be provided. 7. Unreserved ticketing terminals to be expanded from 5000 to 8000. Automatic ticket vending machines to be increased. Arrangement with Department of Posts for issuance of tickets. 8. SMS updates will be made available for passengers to check train status and reservation status. 9. Auto-vending machines to be installed in large and medium stations. 10. E-ticket cancellation system to be simplified. 11.High-capacity air-conditioned double-decker trains to be introduced on select inter-city routes. 12. An Integrated Security System is being developed for 130 vulnerable stations to provide security to passengers. 13. Seven nursing colleges to be set up on railway land in places including Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. 14.Railway medical colleges to be developed along with rail hospitals on public-private partnership. 15. ATMs on 200 mid and small sized stations 16. New factory in West Bengal for making 500 state-of-the- art coaches annually 17. Railways to develop cold storages for farmers to store vegetables and fruits. 18. Scheme named Izzjat for low-income monthly travel till 100 kilometres. 19. Superfast parcel express trains to be started on a pilot basis between Delhi and Chennai and Delhi and Mumbai. 20. Priority areas to be railway catering, punctuality, food and sanity of rail bogeys. 21. Railways to extend helping hand to physically challenged and elderly people by providing ramps, specially designed bogeys. 22. Committed for the downtrodden and development of the country Infotainment services to be provided in major long-distance trains. 23.  The total distance covered  by 18371 trains on Indian Railways is more than three & half time distance from earth to moon

Indian Railway  a largest Railway system under one management runs daily 18371 trains inclding 8984 passenger trains,carry  14 million    passengers/day &  1.6 million tonnes of goods/day along length & width of country . Fixed assets  of Indian Railway ie Track  , Bridges ,Buildings ,roads ,water supply &land  (1.1 lac km of track,  1.27  lac bridges ,   7000  station building,    6 lac staff qr for 14,45,300 employee,   4.5 lac    hectares of land )which constitute of 45% of railway assets   are managed by Engineers of

INDIAN RAILWAY SERVICE of ENGINEERS

In addition,IRSE engineers are executing 256 projects that are in various stages of completion or needed to be taken up and would cost Rs. 56,000 crore. In addition ,the Mega project of Dedicated freight corridor costing about 1.0 lakh cr  today will be constrcted in next 5 to 7 year by engineers of IRSE

 

Gross revenue of indian railways in 2006-07 was Rs 62484 cr ie appx Rs 180 cr per day.in 2006-7 ,indian Railways earned the profit of Rs 20000 cr after coverng the loss of 6000 cr on account of passenger traffic .Gross traffic revenue in 2007-8 is expected ( as per budget speech) to Rs 72 755 cr with cash surplus before dividend as Rs 25000 cr .

 

It is estimated that in 2008-9 ,Gross traffic revenye will be about  Rs. 81,901 cr( actual achieved was 79862 cr).Annual plan for 2008-9 is Rs 37500 cr which is biggest in last 4 decade

 

Budget Estimate for 2009-10    Gross earning -The Gross Traffic Receipts have been projected at Rs . 93,159 cr in intrim budget which is revised to Rs 88419 cr in final budget(july 3),(more than Rs 250 cr per day)The ordinary Working Expenses are estimated at Rs 62000 cr(Rs 170 cr per day) including 60% arrears for pay commission arrears . So Railway has pottential earning of Rs 80 cr per day
